Google Adwords (or it’s equivalent on the Bing Search Engine – Bing Ads) is just one of the many tools in the online marketing toolbox.
For those of you not familiar with this form of online marketing you may well have seen it but not realised what it was. Put simply it’s the little adverts that appear at the top, right and sometimes bottom of a search results page. If you search for something on Google and look closely you’ll actually notice the different sections have been outlined. Unlike the main section of search results on a page which are known as ‘organic search results’, all the other search results have been paid for.
We have managed a number of Google Ads & Bing Ads campaigns for clients and we know, if it’s done properly, it can be a great way of driving pre-qualified traffic and business to our clients with an excellent return on investment. However we’ve also seen how clients have managed their own campaigns, spent a lot of money and not achieved the results they thought they would get.
Here are some of our top tips:
Keep a tight focus on your keywords. For example, if you are a florist don’t bid on the keyword ‘florist’ as you’re likely to be bidding against hundreds (if not thousands) of other florists across the country. You’ll end up paying too much to get your ad seen and you’ll probably be advertising to people all round the country that you can’t service anyway.
Think laterally – If you are in a crowded market the best keywords will cost a lot. Try to get into the heads of your potential customers and think of all the ways they would search for your product or service.
Keep tinkering – Don’t set up your campaign and leave it to run. You need to be checking your results constantly to ensure you are happy with the click-through rates vs costs you are achieving.
Keep Testing – Set up different ad groups and different adverts. keep testing to see what works
